I still remember this poster hanging up in the hospital where I did my clinicals for nursing school. Back then I felt like I needed that poster. Friends definitely did not understand why I wanted to be a nurse, and the whole ” you must be gay” thing certainly was uttered by people a time or two. I think you have to simply handle it with humor.
One elderly female patient asked me if I went to male nursing school. I knew what she meant but I had to have a little fun with that anyways. I replied, “Actually, I started off in female nursing school, but when they found out I was a male they had me switch schools.” Other people would ask me how long I had been a male nurse. At the time I was 25 and I would respond, “Well, I have been a male for 25 years and a nurse for 5 of them.” I was never offended, just trying to have a little fun with them.
There were many men who forged the way into this profession and I thank them greatly for that. This is a profession that has taught me so much. I am proud to be a “male nurse”, or a “murse”. I just wish I could wear a black belt to work like the one dude in the photo!
